With seven outstanding string teachers we are able to offer an exciting range of private violin, viola and cello lessons, as well as group classes and youth orchestra - making the Algoma Conservatory one of the finest centres for string instruction in Ontario. All students receive a weekly private lesson and are encouraged to also be part of one of the group classes. There are 6 different levels of violin group classes directed by Vanessa Mio and similar levels of cello classes directed by Claire Burrows. These lead to the Conservatory Concert Strings, our most senior performing string ensemble directed by Rosemary Gosse. The groups are also combined for youth orchestra performances directed by Guy Traficante. Ages range from 5 through high school. The program is modeled after the world-renowned Indiana University String Academy, directed by Mimi Zweig - blending the strongest elements of a variety of well-established string approaches, included Suzuki and Paul Rolland. While completing her degrees at Indiana University, Conservatory instructor Vanessa Mio had the rare opportunity to serve as Mimi Zweig's assistant for several years. She brings this outstanding experience to Sault Ste. Marie.
